Chapter Nineteen

Dane

They wheeled me to an exam room, and immediately there were more people around me than the room could hold. Some of them cleaned my wounds and checked for glass, while others drew some blood for tests, then an IV line was inserted in my arm, and I was told they were taking me to x-ray.

“Where’s Griff? I want him in here with me,” I said to the orderly who pushed my bed down the hall.

“They’ll update him as soon as we have all the test results back. You had some big pieces of glass in your back, we want to make sure there’s not more that we can’t see.” He explained the same as a few others had, but I didn’t care about their reasons. I wanted Griff.

A wave of cold racked my body and I started shaking violently. “So ccccold,” I said to the orderly just as he pushed me into the x-ray room.

“It could just be the adrenaline wearing off from your experience, but we’ll need to make sure you’re not going into shock.” He used the phone on the wall to call someone before he wheeled me back to the exam room. “They’re too worried about shock. We can do a portable x-ray in your room. It won’t be as accurate, but we can rule out some larger pieces.”

“Griff,” I mumbled as I started to feel lightheaded.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he knows what’s going on.”

I fell asleep as he spoke and wasn’t sure how long it was until I started to wake up again. I was in a room, but not the same exam room. “There you are,” Griff said before walking over to sit on the side of the bed. “I was so worried about you.”

“I was worried about me too. They were taking me for an x-ray, and I started shaking really bad. I guess it wasn’t just from being cold.”

“No, baby, you had lost more blood than they thought. Once they started you on IV fluids you responded very fast. I’m so sorry this happened.” I took his hand and clasped it in mine.

“How do you feel, Dane?” Janis asked and walked over to the other side of the bed.

“Janis, what are you doing here?” I looked from Griff to her. From his worried face to her serene one. She reached out and covered my other hand with hers.

“When you were hurt it was as though an explosion went off on the other side. There’s so much more going on here than just spirits and demons. I’m afraid what we talked about earlier has been put into action.”

“Do you know who’s doing it?” I thought back to the conversation we’d had at her house. She suspected one of us was not who or what they claimed to be, but she wasn’t sure who it was. And since we’d combined our different groups, it made it that much harder.

“Not yet. But I think it’s time we start narrowing it down.”

“How can we do that?” My head was still fuzzy, but I forced myself to pay attention to her words.
